5 Things You Need To Know About Heart Disease

We are living in an era that is always short of time. So, a fast paced, fast food, high-pressure culture is now catching up with our ‘heart’. Heart disease is a single term that covers a broad spectrum of heart-related conditions. Apart from conditions such as irregular heart rhythm, heart valve diseases and enlarged heart the most serious is ischemic heart disease.

This type of disease is caused by the formation of plaque in the arteries carrying blood to the heart. This narrowing down of the blood vessels starts at early as childhood.

Symptoms of Heart disease

We should be aware of the signs and symptoms of heart disease. Each may vary from person to person. Some people may complain of chest pain(angina), some may have nausea and vomiting while others may complain of shortness of breath, pain in the left arm and shoulder.

5 things we must know about heart disease

Family History: If there has been a history of heart disease in your family you are more likely to inherit this condition. Studies have shown that this could be due to hypertension and abnormal blood lipids.

Age and Sex: Men and women above sixty have been noted to be affected more but with changing lifestyle men over the age of 40 have also been known to be affected. Men have been known to be affected more, but women with gestational diabetes, women taking hormonal birth control pills and menopausal women have also been known to have a higher risk of heart diseases.

Stress: This has become a major lifestyle condition leading to heart diseases. The “fight or flight” response triggered in a stressful situation, causes the release of adrenaline. This hormone causes palpitation, the release of excess blood sugar, all of which lead to cardio vascular diseases, like a stroke.

Poor diet and lifestyle conditions

An  unhealthy diet of fast foods, fatty foods, red meat increases the risk of heart disease. Such diet increases the levels of Low-density Lipids (LDL) Cholesterol in blood.  Food high in salt content increases the blood pressure. Both these elevate the risk.

Smoking: Chemicals in tobacco harm the blood vessel causing a condition called atherosclerosis. Even if you are a passive smoker, effects are similar.

Obesity and sedentary lifestyle: A  Body Mass Index (BMI) more than 22 increases the risk significantly.

Other diseases and conditions

Diabetes: Due to increased blood glucose in this condition there is a formation of plaque as mentioned earlier leading to atherosclerosis.

High blood pressure: Alcohol, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, increased intake of salt sets the stage for high blood pressure which in turn will lead to a heart attack.
