Lets face it guys, we all have had a bad one. The only other thing that can be worse than a hangover is finding out how to get rid of it. Various biochemical and physiological processes take place in body during a hangover which present physically as headaches, stomach pain, nausea, blurred vision, photophobia, etc. There are a few things that help alleviate these specific symptoms.

Hangover cures

There are numerous methods that people employ to get relief from a hangover. However, most of these methods do not make any difference to their condition. In fact, some of them even increase the severity of the symptoms. Starting from home-made remedies to the medication, here are some tips you can use  to relieve your hangover and step on your feet again.

Water + Lemon

Water is the best cure for a hangover. Since alcohol is diuretic (i.e. substance causing kidneys to make more urine), it leads to loss of a lot of water from the body. Water consumption, thus, relieves the body of the dehydration that sets in. Adding lemon to your drinking water will also relive your nausea to some extent.  Also, the water results in dilution of the impurities that enter the body with distilled alcohol.

Bloody Mary

No no no… not the cocktail 😛  … We are talking about the virgin bloody marry. The concoction has proven to be of a great help during a hangover. One glass of the mocktail has proven to be an effective cure to hangover.

Sports Drinks

A dose of energy drinks like Redbull® and Monster® effectively replenish your electrolytes and glucose requirements. Consumption of alcohol results in loss of electrolytes from the body. An adequate intake of electrolytes not only replenishes the amount lost, but also relieves the hangover. Added caffeine has a lot of benefits which will be discussed later in this article.

Hangover pills

Aspirin is a good for headaches associated with hangover. Effective and fast. There are various other well known hangover “cures” out there— PreToxx, Chaser and RU 21— but there is very little evidence, if any, to support the claims.

Sauna Bath

Well sometime you have to sweat it out! Taking a sauna bath will increase your blood flow, thereby increasing the overall body metabolism. Also, it opens up your pores and makes your skin glow 😉

Exercise

It may seem impossible to have a workout with a pounding head and drowsy eyes. But, a sweaty exercise session is helpful to alleviate a hangover. The physical exertion the body undergoes pulls back the organs from the numbness, shakes the grogginess out of them and pushes them towards steady functioning.

Sleep

Probably the easiest and most effective cure for a hangover is sleeping it off, taking care not to dehydrate oneself.

Caffeine

Although caffeine is itself known to be an addiction, it really does help in alleviating a hangover. Caffeine intake releases energy into the body but it may cause a post-coffee headache. Thus, it is best to save the coffee for a little while after having consumed enough water to subside the hangover. Caffeine narrows your blood vessels and boosts blood pressure.

Greasy Breakfast

An assured cure for a hangover is the consumption of greasy food. However, such food should be taken before a night of drinking and not after. Greasy food slows down the absorption of alcohol in the blood. The slower the alcohol is absorbed in the blood, the less severe is the hangover.

All the cures duly noted, it is best to prevent a hangover. Keeping a check on the quantity of alcohol one consumes  and adequate hydration save all the trouble caused the day after.
