    All-Natural Remedies for PCOS You Should Try

    Polycystic ovarian syndrome is becoming more and more common these days. It is the most common endocrine disorder among women between 18 to 44 years of age. PCOS is a hormonal imbalance related disorder leading to fluid filled cysts in the ovary .The ovaries get enlarged and stop functioning properly. It is known to be caused due to genetic predisposition.

    The PCOS patient goes through abnormal menstrual cycle or no menstruation leading to infertility, heavy periods, acne, weight gain, thinning hair on the scalp, pelvic pain, excessive hair growth on the face , elevated blood pressure and darkened skin around the neck, under the breasts and around the private parts. The patient may suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, cardiovascular disease, endometrial cancer, mood disorders and type 2 diabetes. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is caused due to increase level of androgens or male hormones in women.

    There are some natural remedies to ease the symptoms and keep it under control. These include:

    Apple Cider Vinegar:

    One needs to mix two spoons of apple cider vinegar with a glass of water and drink with each meal.

    Flaxseed :

    Flaxseeds helps in reducing the levels of male sex hormones in the body. They are rich in fiber and omega 3 fatty acids and thus helps in lowering cholesterol. Flax seeds are also known for anti inflammatory properties and works towards relieving the pain symptoms associated with PCOS.

    Flax seeds can be taken in cereal, applesauce or in smoothies or baked goods.

    Cinnamon:

It helps in decreasing menstrual bleeding, reducing pain and alleviate the common side effects like nausea and vomiting associated with periods.     Cinnamon can be sprinkled on soups, teas, or cereals or over desserts. It can be taken in warm water or added to juices. One spoon of cinnamon along with one spoon of honey can be taken once a day.

    Taking Fenugreek seeds helps in reducing polycystic appearing ovaries and regulating menstrual cycle. They are rich in antioxidant and also helps in managing blood sugar levels. The seed extract improves glycemic control and insulin resistance.

    One needs to soak fenugreek seeds overnight and consume them in the morning for best results . They can be added in curries and soups and  can be used as whole or in ground form.

    Coconut Oil:

    Coconut oil contains medium chain fatty acids and antioxidants that help regulate blood sugar levels and insulin secretion. It reduces bad cholesterol levels in the blood.

    One spoon of coconut oil may be taken as is or added in smoothies.

    Licorice Root :

    Licorice root is a medicinal plant that helps in decreasing the total serum testosterone in healthy women . The root promotes ovulation and inhibits an enzyme required for the production of testosterone.

    Licorice root herbal tea can be prepared by adding it to boiling water and soaking it for 10 minutes. Licorice can be taken as supplements too.

    Green Tea:

    Green tea works in controlling glucose levels and improving insulin sensitivity . Less insulin means lies testosterone production in the body which means more relief from PCOS symptoms. The antioxidants ‘catechins’ present in green tea brings down the levels of hormones that cause ovarian cysts and related symptoms. Green tea also helps in loosing excess weight .

    One should take at least 2 cups of Green tea daily for better results. It is recommended to mix some honey in the green tea for taste. Green Tea capsules may also be taken.

    Spearmint Tea:

    Spearmint has anti androgenic properties and thus helps in reducing levels of male hormones and relieving symptoms like hirsutism or unwanted hair on the face and body.

    It can be taken as Spearmint tea twice daily for best results. One can boil 10 spearmint leaves in water for 3 minutes, strain and drink the tea.

    Cumin/Jeera:

    Cumin should be used on regular basis to overcome symptoms of PCOS.  Cumin seeds contain phytoestrogen and also help fight stress. Cumin is anti diabetic and helps in bringing down sugar levels and cholesterol levels.

    It can be taken by simply boiling cumin seeds in water or soaking the seeds overnight, grounded and taken with honey. The seeds may also be added during cooking meals. Roasted cumin seeds and crushed into powder is easier way of consuming cumin.

    Holy Basil:

    Holy basil is known to lower glucose levels in the blood. The leaves have anti androgenic properties which help in bringing down testosterone levels when consumed.

    One can boil some holy basil leaves in water and drink or chew on the leaves on empty stomach.

    Amla or Indian Gooseberry :

    Amla is an anti inflammatory food and helps in restoring hormonal imbalance. It helps in lowering the cholesterol levels in the blood.

    30 ML of Amla juice diluted with water may be consumed everyday or added to a fruit juice.

    Aloe Vera Juice:

    One glass of Aloe Vera juice helps in reducing blood cholesterol levels and positively impact ovarian function.

    Evening Primrose Oil capsules helps in improving metabolic function and relieving symptoms of PCOS.

    Chia Seeds, Sesame Seeds, Fennel Seeds, Pumpkin Seeds and Kalonji seeds all are very beneficial in relieving symptoms of PCOS.

    Castor oil pack may be used to help relieve symptoms.

    PCOS is not fully curable but the natural remedies can help balance the hormones, regulate sugar levels and relieve PCOS symptoms. One needs to try to lose extra weight, eat anti inflammatory diet and get enough sleep for speedy recovery.

    Anti inflammatory diet includes the use of herbs like turmeric and ginger. One needs to include onions, sweet potatoes, green leafy vegetables, bitter gourd, ivy gourd, extra virgin olive oil and increase the intake of pomegranate juice.

    It is important to avoid processed foods and give up smoking.
