Relevance of Number of Grafts in the Hair Transplant

The number of grafts that we use in implantation process for the hair transplant procedure depends on many factors viz. a successful hair transplant procedure can be done. It depends upon the donor area, hair density, needed number of hair follicles to cover the bald areas and many more things that are related to the scalp strength of the safe donor zone and also the genetic quality of the person, i.e., somebody has genetically dense hair, curled hair or somebody has naturally thinning hair have lower density of hair.

The density of hair is interrelated with the number of grafts can be harvested from donor portion in the hair transplant procedure. High-density Hair Transplant is an effort to give a max possible density at the balding area in which it is practically impossible to see through the appearance of the skin from frontal view or the top view it should look covered. Practically speaking, it is around 60 to 70% of the natural density, i.e. around 60 to 70 follicular units per square centimetre area. The normal density cultivate is around 100 Fu/Sq.cm area. So if somebody is trying for high-density hair transplant the density should be more than 60 FUs/Sq.cm areas.

Under the Giga session with the help of magnification of the microscope with the advanced technology of video-assisted microscope and trained technicians and under the assistance of expert surgeons, can harvest 4000 to 4500 grafts or more than that in a single session of hair transplant. For a hair tissue with approximately 100 grafts per square centimetre, the numbers of grafts that can be received from 1cmx30cm flap from the safe donor zone are about 3000, and 4500 from a 1.5cmx30cm flap of the same zone.

A Giga session is defined by the procedure in which many numbers of hair roots that can be transplanted in one session.

  • 2500 plus Grafts are Mega session
  • 3500 plus Grafts is Giga session

With the help of expert technicians, the dissection of hair roots/grafts up to 4000-4500 grafts under the Giga session of hair transplant can be performed. With the help of 20 X Microscope that offers the correctness to the technician’s hands that made them possible to dissect many numbers of grafts with minimal damage rate and less transition rate. We can achieve somewhere around +99% re-growth rate of the decrease of transition rate of hair roots to up to 1% results in maximum yielding re-growth rate.

Graft Dissection

Naturally, it is very difficult to harvest 4000-4500 grafts in a single session and takes 12 to 14 hour of the day to complete Giga session on a single patient to implant 4500 grafts. Secondly, it depends upon the density of the safe donor zone that how many numbers of grafts we can harvest to cover the bald area. Human head contains approx. 1.25 lakh to 1.50 lakh of hairs and the safe donor zone is in limited areas on the scalp that contain the DHT resistant hair roots; that are the best roots used in the implantation process. It also depends upon the bald area that needed the particular number of grafts to cover the bald zone with full of hair. Here we will think on the density of hair in per square centimetre and their numbers that a normal human being has in their safe donor area. Normally, natural hair density in an average male is 90 to 110 follicular units in a cm square. Giving high-density hair transplant requires long experienced surgeon because it needs highly precise surgical skills and expertise.

The best outcome of high-density hair transplant is resulting in the most natural, dense hair and gives the best results in terms of dense, fuller and natural re-grown hair.

The amount of donor’s hair for a hair transplant varies according to the density of the occipital area means the back part of your scalp where hairs are not programmed to die. Average density in these areas is 60-120 follicular units per square centimetre or 100-120 hairs. The donor area has at least 10,000 follicular units and an expert surgeon can successfully implant the grafts as per the need of baldness.

For the balding grade of 5, 6 & 7 it is required to implant more numbers of grafts so that the bald areas will be fully covered with densely packed hair and that is possible with the Giga or mega session.
