    What is the process?

    The chin area is anaesthetized before beginning. Then, Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is injected in the adipose tissues of the chin areas. Several injections are given separated by one to two centimeters. In a single setting around fifty injections can be given and under a month’s span five of such sitting can be taken. The total number required sitting depends on the individual.

    Clinical Trial results

    FDA only approved the use of Kybella Injection after establishing its safety and effectiveness. Two clinical trials have been held consisting of 1022 participants with moderate to severe fat deposits under the chin. The participants were either given Kybella injections or placebo based on a random selection for a total of six sittings. According to the trial results, the submental fat was significantly reduced in participants receiving Kybella in comparison to those who received placebo.

    Potential side-effects

    Common side effects consists of swelling, bruising, numbness, pain and development of firm area at the injection sites.

    Serious side-effects may include injury to the marginal mandibular nerve which is responsible for facial expressions. The injury may lead to a distorted smile. However, it resolves with time. About 4% of the trial participants suffered from this side effect, eventually everyone recovered from it.
