It’s been over a year and there’s barely a respite from this deadly disease we all know as Covid-19. The number of new cases being detected each day is still on the rise. And, although, we have got several vaccines we cannot let our guards in this battle against the pandemic. We all have to take extreme precautions at all times, especially if we have elderly people or young kids at our home.
It’s true that people who are above 60 are more vulnerable to this disease. Corona virus is particularly more virulent against those who are suffering from serious medical condition such as Hypertension, Diabetes, Lung disease, Heart disease and cancer. It gets even more complicated when a loved one in your family becomes Corona Positive, more so if they are elderly. What do you do then?
1. See a doctor
There is nothing more important than to visit a doctor dealing with Covid cases. The doctor will assess whether a patient needs hospitalisation or home care. Most asymptomatic patients can be taken care of at home. However, those with severe symptoms or with moderate symptoms but co-morbidities may require hospitalisation for further management or observation.
If your doctor has given a clean chit and your loved one can be taken home, you need to adjust and take care of them accordingly. You can also check this excellent book by Dr. Vishakha Shivdasani — COVID and Post-COVID Recovery: DoctorVee’s 6-Point Plan.
2. Isolate the patient
Isolation is an important part of managing a Covid patient. If possible, the patient should be kept in a separate bedroom and use a separate bathroom. At all times a minimum distance of 6 meters is to be maintained. However, isolation doesn’t have to mean solitude. It better than such a person doesn’t stay alone, and appropriate care is provided by the family members, both physically and mentally. Keep children and other elderlies away from them. Limit the visitor at home.
3. Maintaining hygiene
Although it’s a no brainer that you’re supposed to wash your hands regularly to prevent Corona from catching. However, it becomes even more important when you’re about to be in contact with a corona positive patient. You cannot completely avoid contact with a loved one even when they are sick with Covid-19. For example, you would still be supplying them with food, water, laundry etc despite being in isolation. It’s mandatory that you use gloves, masks, and other protective measures when in contact. Take a bath and wash your clothes immediately after. Wash their utensils and clothes separately.
4. Monitor the vitals and symptoms
It’s crucial that you watch for danger signs all the time. Any breathing difficulties, fever, pain, bleeding manifestations or any other symptoms. If possible, get a pulse oximeter to measure oxygen levels in the blood. (Note: most fitness bands come with a feature of pulse oximetry as well).
5. Take care of general well-being
Apart from providing special care for Covid, it’s also important to take of their well-being in general. You cannot physically be in contact with them, doesn’t mean you cannot be involved emotionally and in other ways. If you have a window with a glass, you can always maintain contact across a closed window. However, if that’s not a case, teach them to use phones or laptops to stay in touch especially video calling. You can also teach them to use social media which is not only a good method to stay in touch but also pass time. TVs are all time favourites, especially the older generation. Perhaps you could get them a music system with oldy goldies. Books, chess, well, there are hundreds of methods to keep them busy.
Also encourage them to do yoga or meditation which will benefit their health and mind both.
6. Prepare for emergencies
It’s a no brainer that you should be prepared for emergencies at all times. Store the doctor’s number for reference. Keep a vehicle ready to go if a situation arises when you need to shift them to a hospital. Also, take your doctor’s advice and keep a few drugs for emergency handy.
