6 Oils Your Hair Will Love!

You probably already know how great natural oils are when used as part of your skincare routine, and you might even be experimenting with a few different oils in the kitchen.

But what you probably didn’t know was how amazing those same oils are for your hair.

The Top 6 Natural Oils for Haircare

    Argan Oil

Argan oil has the ability to reflect harmful UV rays from the sun from your hair, which kind of qualifies it as a sunscreen for your hair. It’s also being used in a lot of heat protectants and frizz treatments which can be bought at the health and beauty shop, which should be reason enough to get you to notice it.

By applying a few drops or Argan Oil to damp hair, you’ll be boosting your hair’s resilience, repairing damage, avoiding further damage, and essentially adding to your hair’s shine and manageability factor.

    Coconut Oil

Coconut oil can be used to treat a dry scalp, but it can also support healthy hair growth. Some women swear by the white stuff before a bleach session, as it can help avoid that dreaded chemical burn effect on the hair.

Since coconut oil is so gentle, it can be used on the most sensitive of scalps to help boost follicle health and boost overall shine. Apply coconut oil to dry, unwashed hair and let it sit for at least 30 minutes before rinsing out well with lukewarm water.

    Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil isn’t only great for calluses and brittle nails; it’s actually pretty effective when used as a treatment to help soothe an itchy scalp or when you’re looking for a natural way to boost your hair’s shine level.  Tea tree oil is antibacterial and also has anti-fungal properties, so it cleans down to the root without putting your scalp at risk of drying out, unlike store-bought shampoos.

To use tea tree oil in your hair routine, simply add a few drops of essential oil to your regular shampoo and use as you normally would.

    Shea Butter or Cocoa Butter

Technically speaking, Shea and cocoa butter are not “oils”, but they are still still amazing for your hair, which is why we had feature them here.

Both of these amazing butter’s have the ability to deeply moisturize dry, brittle hair, and restore its natural shine and vitality. All you need to do is heat up a little bit of shea or cacao butter and then apply it to your hair like a mask. Allow the mask to work for 30 minutes, going as long as overnight if you’ve got time to spare. Afterwards, just rinse out well with lukewarm water and shampoo as you normally would.

    Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is great for your skin, which is why most spa therapists use it for massages. That’s also why it’s on our list of fantastic natural haircare products: it’s odorless, non-greasy, and acts as a natural sunscreen for hair. It’s also great when used as a scalp and hair treatment, and since it has the ability to balance out the scalp’s pH levels, it can help treat a dandruff problem in a jiffy.

You’ll be happy to know that grapeseed oil is loaded with vitamin E and linoleic acid, which of course is great to feed your hair with when you’re trying to strengthen and repair damaged hair.

    Pomegranate Seed Oil

While this isn’t something you’ll find on the shelves of your local convenience store, going out shopping for pomegranate seed oil will definitely be worth your while.

The reason why we love this oil for a hair treatment is because it’s rich in antioxidants and Punicic Acid, a type of essential fatty acid that promotes hair growth. If your hair is dry and damaged (go ahead and blame it on those highlights!) then pomegranate seed oil can help boost your hair’s appearance, and since it feeds the hair on the inside, it can promote healthy hair growth and prevent further breakage.

Pomegranate seed oil is applied just like a coconut oil mask. Simply heat the oil a little in the microwave and then apply through the lengths of your hair, allowing the mask to work for at least 40 minutes before rinsing and shampooing.

Bonus Tip: All of these oils can be applied to your hair and scalp as a mask, and left to work for a minimum of 30 minutes (unless you have time to let it sit overnight). To boost the effectiveness of your natural oil hair mask, try wrapping your hair in cling film and applying medium heat to your head for about 10 minutes. This will allow the oils to penetrate deeply and nourish the hair from root to tip.

We hope that you found this post useful, and that you’re already planning some “you-time” where you can try these oils out. If you’ve already tried treating your hair with natural oils and we didn’t mention it on this list, feel free to share your success story with us!
