Factors Affecting the Success of an IUI Cycle

Intrauterine Insemination is an assisted reproduction technique used in cases of male factor infertility related to the ejaculation problems and in females having cervical problems. It is an innovative technique which supports the fertilization process. When you find it difficult to conceive naturally because of unexplained reasons, IUI may prove to be a savior.

These days when infertility is on a rising high, assisted reproductive technique like IUI is a ray of hope for a number of couples who are trying to start their parenting journey. Increasing infertility cases are putting assisted reproduction at the frontline of medical treatments. Moreover, couples now a days do not hesitate while seeking the help of technology to achieve conception.

Let’s first understand what exactly is the IUI process?

IUI is the least invasive technique of assisted reproduction which involves placing washed sperm directly into the uterus. The objective of IUI process is to increase the chances of fertilization. An IUI cycle can be suggested to the couples who are facing conception failures because of the following reasons:

    • Unexplained infertility
    • Cervical mucus problems
    • Ejaculation Problems with the Male Partner
    • Cervical scar tissue from past procedures

    How does the process work?

IUI is a very simple technique and generally considered to cause minimal discomfort. Semen samples are collected from the male partner and washed to prepare for insemination. IUI is done around the time of ovulation. Sperm samples are directly inserted into the uterus using a catheter. It increases the number of sperm cells in the uterus, which in turn increases the chances of conception.

This procedure may sometimes require the use of fertility drugs to stimulate ovulation in order to get a high number of eggs. Moreover, sperm preparation enables to get the best quality sperm and hence the chances of conception are improved.

When you consider an IUI Cycle it is important to understand the factors which can impact the outcome of your cycle. Though all the factors may not be related to you, the fertility centre you have chosen will play an important role as well. A well planned procedure performed with perfection as per your needs can maximize the chances of a successful conception through IUI.

    Ovary Stimulation

Controlled Ovarian Hyperstimulation (COH) is a technique used to induce ovulation using fertility drugs. This is done to achieve superovulation in women so that a large number of eggs can be produced. This method is generally suggested for women who are aged 35 or above. It is believed that this can increase the chances of conception as compared to a natural cycle.

    Timing of Ovulation:

It is another crucial factor contributing to the success of IUI process. Prepared sperm samples must be inseminated at the right time of ovulation, which can be planned through LH monitoring or hCG trigger. It offers a better control over the IUI cycle.

    Frequency of Insemination:

Many studies have shown that double insemination during the IUI cycle can increase the probability of a successful pregnancy  as compared to a single insemination.

    Age:

A woman’s age is one of the most important factors affecting the success rate of an IUI cycle. The chances of successful conception start decreasing  as a woman crosses 35. This is the stage where the fertility drugs come into play to boost the chances of conception.

    Past Medical History:

History of pelvic inflammation, endometriosis or tubal factors in women reduce the chances of conception through IUI

    Sperm Preparation:

Sperm samples are taken from the male partner for an IUI cycle. This sample is then prepared by sperm washing in order to achieve a  healthy sperm concentration. Using this prepared sperm sample can increase the success rate of IUI cycle.

These are some of the deciding factors of an IUI cycle. Some of these depend on your physical wellbeing and others can be managed by your fertility clinic. The very first step towards the success of your IUI process is to choose the right fertility clinic for you.

How can the right fertility clinic make a difference to your IUI outcome?

When you consider to undergo IUI or any other assisted reproductive technique, you spend a lot of money and time. Getting a negative result may be highly disturbing for you that you find it easy to give up than trying further. A fertility clinic having an experienced team of doctors and embryologists, advanced infrastructure, latest tools and techniques can minimize the chances of a negative result.
