How To Purify Water

    Clean and purified water is essential and drinking it should be the integral part of your healthy everyday life. Not getting enough water leads to dehydration, muscle weakness, and a lack of coordination and concentration. Drinking water regularly throughout the day is the perfect way to stay healthy and energized.

    However, not all water is good for your mental and psychical well-being. Toxic and unclean water, for example, definitely pose a serious threat to your health. There are numerous water contaminants, from toxic fluoride, arsenic, and lead, to different types of harmful bacteria and parasites that may be pouring out of your faucet. Luckily, there are different ways to purify drinking water and thus protect yourself and your family from these dangerous compounds.

    Boiling water

    Boiling water is the simplest yet really effective method of purifying water because it kills off the vast majority of living organisms in it. Whether you are out camping or you are sure that your local water supply has become contaminated, boiling water is the safest method of purifying it from germs and parasites. To boil water, all you need is a heat source and a vessel to hold the water. After five minutes of boiling, your water will be adequately purified.

    However, although this method is useful, remember that boiling water does not remove all microscopic pathogens the water might contain. That’s why we need a more effective method of purifying.

    Ultraviolet light

    Using UV water purifier is probably the best purification method that successfully destroys all kinds of dangerous pathogens like Escherichia coli and salmonella. Without any need for chemicals such as chlorine, ultraviolet light will kill every bacteria living in the water so that you can safely drink it. Basically, there are no microorganisms that are immune to ultraviolet light.

    How does ultraviolet light work? Simply said, when bacteria, viruses, spores or similar pathogens are exposed to germicidal wavelengths, they are crushed instantly, or their DNA is highly damaged, resulting in incapability of the microorganisms to reproduce. However, although ultraviolet light does not remove inorganic compounds from the water, it is highly efficient in removing the organic ones.

    Compared to other purification methods, UV water treatment is cheap, easy to operate and energy efficient. For example, in terms of primary energy used, it is far more efficient than boiling.

    Carbon filters

    Water filters are one of the oldest options for purifying water, and perhaps the most popular medium is carbon. More specifically, water filters use a special type of carbon also known as activated carbon. Activated carbon filters successfully remove insecticides and herbicides, but are less successful in removing heavy metals and most inorganic chemicals. Also, carbon filters gradually lose their potency leaving more and more impurities in the water over time.

    Reverse osmosis

    Reverse osmosis filtration is a purification method that successfully removes pollutants from the water like nitrates, pesticides, sulfates and bacteria. By forcing water through a semipermeable membrane, this method also removes heavy metals, viruses, and dangerous chemicals.

    Although it is highly effective in removing these compounds, this method suffers from several significant disadvantages. For instance, reverse osmosis is resource wasteful. In order to produce one gallon of clean water, approximately five additional gallons of water are wasted.

    Besides that, this purification method has also come under attack because of the incompatibility with hard water. If your water is hard, make sure you use a water softener before using reverse osmosis.

    Purification tablets

    Another way to clean your drinking water from unwanted chemicals and microorganisms is by using purification tablets or drops. They are available for purchase predominantly in sporting, camping and adventure stores, and can successfully protect your water from bacteria.

    However, if you care about the taste and smell of your drinking water, note that this method of purification is probably not for you. Also, if you are a pregnant woman or if you suffer from thyroid problems, you should consult with a doctor before using them. It is possible that water purification tablets contain some elements which are not suitable for those sensitive groups.

    If you are going to the wilderness for camping or just want to be sure that the water you drink is clean and healthy for your everyday use, you should consider purifying it. Which water purification method you will use depends entirely on you. Just remember to stay hydrated!
