20 Home Remedies to Get Rid of Whiteheads

White heads, medically called as closed comedones, occurs when skin pores are blocked by sebum, dirt or dead skin cells. If something is not done about the white heads they may progress to full-fledged pimples or acne. White head appears as white bumps on the skin surface and are more in common in people with oily skin. In contrast to white heads, black heads are open comedones full of sebum, dirt or dead skin cells formed due to oxidation. Other symptoms are same with both white heads and black heads, except that white heads aren’t as painful.

White heads can be easily removed at home with a few simple home remedies. Some of the home remedies are given below:

1. Facial Steaming

The best method to get rid of whiteheads is facial steaming. It unblocks the skin pores. You can use the steam through a boiling kettle or open pan. After steaming you can easily push the whiteheads out.

2. Oatmeal Scrub

Scrubbing helps in opening up the hair follicles blockage. Oatmeal scrubs can be bought from local and online stores, or prepared at home by mixing honey, oatmeal and sugar.

Add one-quarter cup of honey and brown sugar each in one-third oatmeal. Mix them well and apply the paste on your face. You must gently massage the face for five minutes followed by rinsing with warm water.

3. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a rich source of vitamin C and are quite effective in dull skin. You can scrub the tomato pulp on your face, applying more over the areas affected with whiteheads. Let it remain on skin for about 5 minutes. Rinse with water.

4. Potato Face Mask

You can prepare a potato face mask by grinding a few fresh potatoes. Apply the mixture on your face. Keep it on for 30 minutes before rinsing it off.

5. Milk

Milk is also good for removing whiteheads. Mix 2 tablespoon of milk in 1 tablespoon of salt and 1 tablespoon of lemon juice. Mix them well. Rub the mixture on your face in a circular manner. Wash your face with water and dry your skin.

6. Lemon

With the help of cotton ball smear lemon juice on the face. Citric acid present in the lime juice opens up the skin pores, and remove the excess oil.

7. Toothpaste

It’s true that fluoride present in the toothpaste is helpful in curing both whiteheads and acne. For whiteheads you can apply any gel-based toothpaste on the affected areas of the skin. Leave it for few minutes before rinsing the face with cold water.

8. Clay Mask

Clay mask is an excellent exfoliator of the dead skin cells. You must apply a thin layer on your face and let it to dry for about 10 minutes. Rinse it off with warm water.

9. Almonds

Grind a few almonds and add a teaspoonful of oatmeal and little rosewater to prepare a paste. Apply the mixture on the affected skin areas. Rinse off with cold water after 15 minutes.

10. Apple Cider Vinegar

After taking a steam bath you may apply apple cider vinegar on your skin. Leave it to dry. You shouldn’t rinse after applying apple cider vinegar.

11. Rosewater

Soak a cotton ball with rosewater and rub over the face. You shouldn’t wash it off. Apply it daily to get rid of the whiteheads. Rosewater can also be added to a variety of other face masks for best results.

12. Lemon Juice, Garlic with Orange Peel Scrub

Blend together 2 pieces of garlic, ½ orange peel (in dried and powered form) and 3 tablespoon lemon juice and ½ orange peels to prepare a thick paste. Smear the paste over the affected skin areas. Keep it for 10 minutes before washing off with lukewarm water. For best results repeat two times a day.

13. Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is an effective antibacterial agent that diminishes the skin pores blockage responsible for whiteheads. Use benzoyl peroxide only when you’re suffering from a moderate episode of white heads.

14. Retinoid Cream

Retinoid creams are great remedy to get rid of whiteheads. It is also helpful in many other skin conditions. These creams open up the blocked skin pores, kill the bacteria and remove the excess oil. You can buy retinoid cream from local or online stores easily.

15. Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid is quite efficient in killing the bacteria present over the skin surface. You can buy salicylic acid in the form of ointment. Make sure you apply the ointment only on the affected areas and not on the entire face.

16. Cinnamon Mask

Cinnamon mask can be easily prepared using the regular kitchen ingredients. Mix ½ tablespoon of cinnamon powder with 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon lemon juice along with a little water in a container. Apply the mask over the skin of your face and neck. Leave it to dry. Wash it off with lukewarm water. You may apply a cinnamon mask twice a week.

17. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a potent antifungal and antibacterial agent, thereby getting rid of whitehead causing bacteria. It also prevents further whitehead development. Nevertheless, you should not apply tea tree oil on the skin directly, since it may lead to a skin reaction. To apply dilute it in water or in aloe vera gel in the ratio of 1:9. Before applying first cleanse the face. Then, smear a cotton ball soaked in the tea tree oil over the affected skin areas. Leave it dry, you must not rinse it off.

18. Yogurt

Blend three tablespoons yogurt in two tablespoons oatmeal, one teaspoon olive oil and one tablespoon lemon juice. Apply the mixture over your face and neck. Wait for 5 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water.

19. Tea Bags

You can rub an empty used tea bag over the affected skin areas. For best results repeat it at least twice a week.

20. Aloe Vera

After cleansing your face you may apply aloe vera gel over your skin. It helps in keeping the skin moist and soft.
